Qualcomm is looking to help take Augmented Reality to the next level by releasing an augmented reality software development kit for Android phones, along with a $200,000 challenge for the best Android AR apps.
Qualcomm is on a mission to help developers build fun, useful, exciting AR apps. That is why we’re planning the first ever Augmented Reality Developer Challenge with $200,000 in total prize money.
Games, educational apps, media & marketing tools, instructional manuals – You’re only limited by the scope of your imagination (though you must of course use the Qualcomm AR SDK to build the app).
The Challenge will commence in the Fall of 2010, when the AR SDK is made available for public download.
- First Place – US $125,000
- Second Place – US $50,000
- Third Place – US $25,000

The Potential of Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality (AR) has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with the world around us. By overlaying digital information onto the physical world, AR can enhance our perception and provide us with new ways to experience and interact with our environment. This technology can be applied in various fields such as gaming, education, healthcare, and retail, among others.
For instance, in the gaming industry, AR can create immersive experiences that blend the virtual and real worlds. Imagine playing a game where characters and objects appear in your living room, interacting with your surroundings in real-time. This level of immersion can make games more engaging and enjoyable.
In education, AR can be used to create interactive learning experiences. Students can explore historical sites, conduct virtual science experiments, or visualize complex concepts in 3D. This can make learning more engaging and help students understand and retain information better.
Qualcomm’s Role in Advancing AR Technology
Qualcomm’s release of the AR software development kit (SDK) for Android phones is a significant step towards advancing AR technology. The SDK provides developers with the tools they need to create high-quality AR applications. It includes features such as image recognition, 3D object tracking, and real-time rendering, which can help developers create more sophisticated and interactive AR experiences.
The $200,000 challenge is an incentive for developers to explore the possibilities of AR and push the boundaries of what is possible. By offering substantial prize money, Qualcomm is encouraging developers to invest time and resources into creating innovative AR applications. This can lead to the development of new and exciting AR experiences that can benefit various industries and improve our daily lives.
Moreover, Qualcomm’s initiative can help create a community of AR developers who can share ideas, collaborate on projects, and contribute to the growth of the AR ecosystem. This can lead to the development of new standards and best practices, which can help improve the quality and consistency of AR applications.
In conclusion, Qualcomm’s release of the AR SDK and the $200,000 challenge is a significant step towards advancing AR technology. By providing developers with the tools and incentives they need to create innovative AR applications, Qualcomm is helping to unlock the full potential of AR and pave the way for new and exciting experiences. Whether it’s in gaming, education, healthcare, or retail, AR has the potential to transform the way we interact with the world around us, and Qualcomm is playing a crucial role in making this a reality.
