Printrbot has this week announced the launch of a new dual extruder 3D printer head which will be soon available to use with their Metal Plus 3D Printer.
The new dual extruder 3D printer head enables the printer to create objects using two different filaments as you can see in the photo above. This advancement opens up a plethora of possibilities for 3D printing enthusiasts and professionals alike, allowing for more complex and colorful designs.
Advantages of Dual Extruder 3D Printing
Dual extruder 3D printing offers several significant advantages over single extruder systems. Firstly, it allows for the use of multiple materials in a single print. This means that you can combine materials with different properties, such as flexibility and rigidity, to create more functional and versatile objects. For example, you could print a part that has a rigid frame but flexible joints, which would be impossible with a single extruder.
Secondly, dual extruders enable multi-color printing. This is particularly useful for creating visually appealing models, prototypes, and even educational tools. Imagine printing a model of the Earth with accurate color representation of the continents and oceans, or a company logo in its true colors. The possibilities are endless.
Although Printrbot explains a little more and warns those new to 3D printing about installing the dual extruder 3D printer head upgrade:
“Upgrade your Printrbot Metal Plus from one extruder to two. The Dual Extruder Upgrade will enable you to print multiple materials or colors simultaneously. ATX power supply required, but not included.
Double the pleasure, double the fun! …and frustration. Dual extruder printing is for EXPERTS ONLY. If you are just getting into 3D printing, save yourself a significant amount of grief and stick with the single print head for now. We are serious. If you are not a master 3D printer, do not order this product.”
Challenges and Considerations
While the benefits of dual extruder 3D printing are substantial, it is not without its challenges. As Printrbot warns, dual extruder printing is recommended for experts only. This is because managing two extruders requires a higher level of skill and experience. Issues such as filament jamming, calibration, and print head alignment become more complex when dealing with two extruders.
Moreover, dual extruder systems are generally more expensive than their single extruder counterparts. The additional hardware and the need for a more powerful power supply (such as the ATX power supply mentioned by Printrbot) contribute to the increased cost. Therefore, it is essential to weigh the benefits against the costs and challenges before deciding to upgrade.
If you are a master 3D printer, the new Printrbot dual extruder 3D printer head is now available to pre-order from the official Printrbot website via the link below. This upgrade could significantly enhance your 3D printing capabilities, allowing you to tackle more complex projects and achieve higher levels of detail and functionality in your prints.
