It looks like UK webOS fans will finally be able to get their hands on the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus, as mobile phone operator O2 has announced that both handsets will be available on their network from next week.
The Palm Pre Plus will be available for free on O2 with a 24-month £35 a month contract, or a £40 a month 18-month contract, whilst the Palm Pixi Plus will be available free on a 24-month £30 a month contract or an 18-month £35 a month contract.
Both contracts come with unlimited text and data, although it isn’t exactly unlimited as it is subject to O2’s fair use policy. Both models will be available from O2 UK from Friday the 28th May 2010.
Features and Specifications
The Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus are both powered by the webOS operating system, which was highly praised for its intuitive user interface and multitasking capabilities. The Palm Pre Plus features a 3.1-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 320×480 pixels, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a 3-megapixel camera with LED flash. It also comes with 16GB of internal storage, which is ample space for apps, music, and photos.
On the other hand, the Palm Pixi Plus is slightly more compact with a 2.63-inch capacitive touchscreen and a resolution of 320×400 pixels. It also includes a fixed QWERTY keyboard and a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash. The Pixi Plus offers 8GB of internal storage, which should be sufficient for most users’ needs.
Additional Benefits and Considerations
One of the standout features of both the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus is their ability to handle multitasking efficiently. The webOS operating system allows users to run multiple applications simultaneously and switch between them seamlessly using a card-based interface. This makes it easy to manage tasks such as browsing the web, checking emails, and using social media apps without any noticeable lag.
Another significant advantage is the synergy feature, which integrates information from various sources such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft Exchange into a single, unified view. This means that users can see all their contacts, calendars, and messages in one place, making it easier to stay organized and connected.
For those concerned about connectivity, both devices support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, ensuring that users can stay connected to the internet and other devices. The Palm Pre Plus also includes GPS functionality, which can be useful for navigation and location-based services.
It’s also worth noting that O2’s fair use policy, while limiting, is generally quite generous. Most users will find that the data allowance is more than sufficient for everyday activities such as browsing, streaming music, and using social media. However, heavy data users who frequently stream video or download large files may need to monitor their usage to avoid exceeding the limits.
The availability of the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus on O2 UK is exciting news for webOS enthusiasts. Both devices offer a range of features that cater to different user preferences, from the larger screen and higher storage capacity of the Pre Plus to the compact design and affordability of the Pixi Plus. With their intuitive operating system, multitasking capabilities, and integrated information management, these handsets are well-suited for users looking for a versatile and user-friendly smartphone experience.
