Checkout this fantastic art installation created by a Viennese/Croatian design collective For Use/Numen. They’ve used packing tape to create a huge spider’s web-like construction which is capable of supporting visitors who wish to explore the interior. This innovative and interactive piece of art has captured the imagination of many, blending creativity with structural engineering. Checkout the video after the jump.
The Evolution of the Installation
The installation has grown over time and has been installed three times in the past year with the next being at the DMY Berlin’s International Design Fair, June 9–13. Each iteration of the installation has seen improvements and refinements, making it more robust and visually striking. The design collective For Use/Numen has continually pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved with such a simple material as packing tape.
The first installation was a smaller-scale prototype, which allowed the designers to test the structural integrity and visitor interaction. Feedback from these initial installations has been invaluable, leading to the larger and more complex versions that followed. The installation at DMY Berlin’s International Design Fair is expected to be the most ambitious yet, incorporating new design elements and interactive features.
Technical Details and Visitor Experience
Using nothing but packing tape, the pictured installation was its last incarnation inside Odeon, a former stock exchange building in Vienna. The group used nearly 117,000 feet and 100 pounds of tape, approximately 530 reels of tape. This massive amount of tape was meticulously layered and intertwined to create a structure that is both strong and flexible. The design allows visitors to walk, crawl, and climb through the web, providing a unique and immersive experience.
The installation’s ability to support human weight is a testament to the strength of the material and the ingenuity of the design. Visitors often describe the experience as surreal, feeling as though they are navigating through a giant spider’s web. The semi-transparent nature of the tape adds to the ethereal quality of the installation, creating interesting light patterns and shadows as visitors move through it.
Safety is a paramount concern for the designers. Each installation undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it can safely support the weight of multiple visitors at once. The tape is applied in multiple layers, with each layer adding to the overall strength and stability of the structure. The design collective also works closely with structural engineers to ensure that the installation meets all safety standards.
The installation has not only been a hit with the public but has also garnered attention from the art and design community. It has been featured in numerous design magazines and websites, and has sparked discussions about the potential of everyday materials in creating large-scale art installations. The success of the packing tape web has inspired other artists and designers to experiment with unconventional materials in their own work.
