Nokia recently released their second Android smartphone, the Nokia X2, this is the first Android device to be released by the Nokia mobile division under Microsoft’s ownership, and now there are rumors of a Nokia Lumia Android handset.
Nokia’s flagship smartphone, under their Lumia range, come with Windows Phone, the latest ones come with Windows Phone 8.1, but this may be about to change.
According to @evleaks, Microsoft is planning to release an Android smartphone under the Nokia Lumia brand, although as yet there are no details on any specific hardware.
Big news: Android-powered Lumia incoming, from Nokia by Microsoft
This would be a somewhat strange move by Microsoft, the company has been trying to promote its Windows Phone platform through the Nokia Lumia devices, this was one of the reasons that Microsoft purchased the Nokia mobile division.
Things certainly have changed at Microsoft since Steve Ballmer left as the company’s CEO and Satya Nadella took over, and this could be another part of his strategy to change direction at Microsoft.
Microsoft could do very well with a Nokia Lumia smartphone running Google’s Android OS, especially if it is a high end device to compete with the likes of the Galaxy S5 and the LG G3.
Maybe Microsoft sees this as a way to get Android fans interested in their Lumia hardware, which could also get them interested in their Windows Phone platform in the future, whatever their strategy is, it will be interesting to find out exactly what they have planned.
