Nintendo 3DS is scheduled to go on sale in the UK next week, on Friday March the 25th, and it has been available to pre-order on Amazon and a number of other retailers.
Amazon UK has released some details on the amount of pre-orders for the Nintendo 3DS, and whilst they don’t quote any specific unit sales, they have revealed that the Nintendo 3DS has now taken the title of the most pre-ordered console.
According to Amazon, the previous record was held by Sony’s PlayStation 3, and they have now received 20 percent more pre-orders for the Nintendo 3DS.
“It’s unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch, such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year’s Microsoft Kinect,” said Amazon UK’s director of video games, Chris Poad.
Innovative Features of the Nintendo 3DS
The Nintendo 3DS is not just another handheld console; it brings several innovative features to the table that have captured the interest of gamers worldwide. One of the most talked-about features is its ability to display 3D graphics without the need for special glasses. This autostereoscopic 3D technology allows players to experience a new depth in gaming, making characters and environments pop out of the screen in a way that has never been seen before on a handheld device.
Additionally, the 3DS includes a built-in motion sensor and gyroscope, which allows for motion-based controls. This means that players can tilt and move the console to interact with games in a more immersive way. The device also features two cameras on the outside, enabling users to take 3D photos and even play augmented reality games using the AR cards that come bundled with the console.
Market Impact and Future Prospects
It will be interesting to see how popular the Nintendo 3DS becomes, as it could end up becoming the most popular handheld games console if sales figures keep up with the pre-order figures. The high pre-order numbers suggest a strong market demand, which could translate into significant sales figures post-launch. Historically, Nintendo has had a strong presence in the handheld gaming market, with previous successes like the Game Boy and the Nintendo DS series. The 3DS seems poised to continue this legacy.
Moreover, the 3DS has a robust lineup of launch titles and upcoming games that are likely to attract a wide range of gamers. Titles like “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D,” “Super Mario 3D Land,” and “Mario Kart 7” are highly anticipated and are expected to drive sales further. The console also supports backward compatibility with Nintendo DS games, providing an extensive library of games right from the start.
Another factor that could contribute to the 3DS’s success is its social and connectivity features. The StreetPass and SpotPass functionalities allow players to exchange game data and receive content from the internet even when the console is in sleep mode. This encourages a sense of community and continuous engagement with the device.
The Nintendo 3DS is shaping up to be a groundbreaking handheld console with its innovative features and strong market interest. If the pre-order figures are any indication, it could very well become one of the most popular gaming devices of its time. As we approach the launch date, all eyes will be on Nintendo to see if the 3DS can live up to the hype and set new standards in the world of handheld gaming.
