Motorola is looking to do what Apple once did with their original iPhone, disrupt the mobile phone industry, and now the company’s CEO has talked about the Apple iPhone, and how much the device costs.
In an interview with Trusted Reviews, Dennis Woodside talked about the iPhone and its high price, and he said that Motorola thinks that the prices of high quality devices needs to change.
“When the iPhone first came out it cost $650 and today it costs $650,”
“We think there’s an opportunity particularly as mobile computing becomes less of a privilege and more of a necessity. There’s a huge market for that type of product which, for some reason, the smartphone industry has not really focussed on.”
He also talked about the Motorola Moto G, which he describes as a device with ‘super compelling value’, and we suspect Motorola has plans for more low cost devices in the future.
The Motorola G retails for around £135 unlocked, and it has specifications of a handset that would retail for twice the price, we wonder if Motorola is actually making a profit on these handsets, if so it will be a small one.
After all Motorola is owned by Google, who are interested in getting their Android mobile OS in the hands of more people, one way to do this is to offer a high quality smartphone for an affordable price.
We are looking forward to seeing what Motorola releases next, there are rumors of a tablet in the works and also a number of new smartphones.
