A man named Ryan W Simonetti and two coworkers were visiting Washington DC recently when they decided to hail an Uber car using the app. When they walked up to the Uber car, Simonetti says that a DC Taxi Inspector was talking to the Uber driver. As the three men got into the car with the driver, the Uber driver began driving down the street.
Simonetti says that the Taxi inspector then turned on his lights and began following the Uber car. Simonetti told the driver, “That cop’s following you. What’s going on?” the driver allegedly said that it wasn’t a real cop and then ran a red light. Simonetti said that the driver drove well over the speed limit to evade authorities.
The three men claim to have asked to be let out of the car several times and say it was like being on an episode of Cops. The driver was asked to stop repeatedly but allegedly told the passengers if he stopped he would get a $2000 fine.
“It was insane,” Simonetti said. “I physically tried to force his leg to hit the brake. I ripped off his pant leg … I said, ‘Here’s two options. You take this exit, or I’m going to knock the side of your head in. If we crash, we crash, but you’re gonna kill us anyway.’” The incident is under investigation by Uber and the police.
