Land Rover has taken the wraps off a new Transparent Bonnet concept that uses Augmented Reality (AR) to give you a better view of the road.
The Land Rover Transparent Bonnet Concept uses cameras which are mounted in the vehicle’s grille. It then displays what the cameras can see on the bonnet of the vehicle. Have a look at the video below; there is also a heads-up display.
The technology enables a driver climbing a steep incline or manoeuvring in a confined space to see an augmented reality view capturing not only the terrain in front of the car but also the angle and position of the front wheels.
From the city to the sand dunes, Land Rover’s new, driver-assisting technology will enable safer, smarter and more enjoyable driving in the SUVs of tomorrow.
Innovative Technology for Enhanced Safety
The Transparent Bonnet Concept is a groundbreaking innovation that aims to enhance driver safety and vehicle maneuverability. By integrating AR technology, Land Rover provides drivers with a virtual view of the road directly beneath the front of the vehicle. This is particularly useful in challenging driving conditions such as off-road terrains, steep inclines, and tight urban spaces. The cameras in the grille capture real-time footage, which is then projected onto a heads-up display on the windshield. This allows drivers to see obstacles that would otherwise be hidden by the vehicle’s bonnet.
For instance, when navigating rocky trails or uneven surfaces, the Transparent Bonnet can help drivers avoid potential hazards like large rocks or deep potholes. In urban environments, it can assist in parking by providing a clear view of curbs and other obstacles. This technology not only enhances safety but also boosts driver confidence in various driving scenarios.
Future Implications and Applications
Land Rover’s Transparent Bonnet Concept is part of a broader trend towards integrating advanced technologies into vehicles to improve the driving experience. As autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles become more prevalent, features like the Transparent Bonnet could play a crucial role in ensuring these vehicles can navigate complex environments safely.
Moreover, this technology has the potential to be adapted for other types of vehicles, including commercial trucks and construction equipment, where visibility of the immediate surroundings is critical. For example, in construction sites, operators of heavy machinery could benefit from a similar AR system to avoid accidents and improve precision in their tasks.
Land Rover will be showcasing this new Transparent Bonnet Concept in their new Discovery Vision Concept at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. This event will provide an opportunity for the public and industry experts to see the technology in action and understand its potential benefits.
