Joerg Sprave has this month featured three students on his Slingshot channel who have created a survival axe with a slingshot concealed in the handle, together with other useful gadgets for outdoor survival. This innovative creation showcases the ingenuity and practical skills of the students from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), who were tasked with designing a new survival tool as part of their project brief.
Design and Features of the Survival Axe
The very unique and original weapon has been designed by students from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) after they were given a project brief to create a new survival tool. The outcome is a versatile and multifunctional survival axe that combines several essential tools into one compact design.
Joerg Sprave explains: “The outcome is actually very nice: A good size, heavy steel axe, attached to a thick tubular steel handle. The handle is hollow and holds four aluminium tubes – a magnesium firestarter and three steel-tipped bolts. One of the bolts even contains an active carbon water filter, so it can be used like a straw that at the same time cleans the water.”
The axe itself is made from heavy-duty steel, ensuring durability and effectiveness in various survival situations. The thick tubular steel handle not only provides a sturdy grip but also serves as a storage compartment for additional survival tools. The inclusion of a magnesium firestarter is particularly useful for starting fires in emergency situations, while the steel-tipped bolts can be used for hunting or self-defense.
Innovative Use of Space and Materials
One of the most impressive aspects of this survival axe is the innovative use of space within the handle. By hollowing out the handle and inserting aluminium tubes, the students have managed to incorporate multiple survival tools without compromising the structural integrity of the axe. This clever design maximizes the utility of the axe while keeping it compact and easy to carry.
The active carbon water filter is another standout feature. In survival situations, access to clean drinking water is crucial. The water filter bolt allows the user to drink directly from natural water sources, filtering out harmful contaminants and ensuring safe hydration. This feature alone can be a lifesaver in the wilderness.
The slingshot concealed in the handle adds another layer of functionality to the survival axe. Slingshots can be used for hunting small game or as a means of self-defense. By integrating the slingshot into the handle, the students have created a multi-purpose tool that can adapt to various survival scenarios.
In addition to its practical applications, the survival axe also demonstrates the students’ ability to think creatively and engineer solutions to complex problems. The project not only required technical skills but also a deep understanding of survival needs and resourcefulness.
Overall, this survival axe is a testament to the innovative spirit and technical prowess of the students from the Technical University of Munich. It combines essential survival tools into one compact and versatile design, making it an invaluable asset for anyone venturing into the wilderness.
