It is that time of the year when Apple [AAPL] are due to release details of the next generation iPhone, the latest rumor doing the rounds is that the iPhone 4 (fourth generation) will feature multitasking support.
One of the main problems with the iPhone is that you can only run one application at once, if you want to use a different application, you have to close the app you are currently using and then launch the new one.
According to Apple Insider, iPhone OS 4.0 will deliver multitasking to the iPhone, which could possibly mean that this feature will be rolled out to existing models of the iPhone and also the Apple iPad which will ship with the iPhone OS 3.2.
There are no details on when we could possibly see iPhone OS 4.0, but it will most likely coincide with the launch of the iPhone 4G, and going on past release dates of the iPhone this could be some time around June or July 2010.
At the moment it is just a rumor, but this is likely something that Apple will implement in the future if it wants to compete with mobile phone operating systems like Google Android. Have a look and our article on Android vs iPhone to see which smartphone and mobile platform is best for you.
