The DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) has just been changed in the US, and one of the most notable changes is that it is now legal to jailbreak your iPhone or any other mobile phone for that matter.
You can see the changes below which now make it legal to jailbreak your iPhone or any other mobile phone.
‘Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.’
It is now also legal to unlock your mobile phone from whichever carrier it is tied to.
‘Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable used wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telecommunications network, when circumvention is initiated by the owner of the copy of the computer program solely in order to connect to a wireless telecommunications network and access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.’
The Library of congress has exempted jailbreaking and unlocking your mobile phone, and whilst Apple and AT&T don’t have to accept these activities, if they try to stop people from jailbreaking or unlocking their mobile phone this could be another matter.
