We have been hearing for quite some time that Apple [AAPL] would be launching the iPhone on other networks in the US, first it was rumored to be Verizon, then it was Sprint, and now the latest rumor is saying that T-Mobile will be getting the iPhone 4 in the US.
According to Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu, it may be close than we think yeah and another provider could be getting the iPhone 4 sometime this fall.
The reason that Saw Wu says that T-Mobile may be the network of choice for Apple to sell the iPhone 4 on as well as AT&T is that T-Mobile are a GSM network like AT&T and they would be able to roll the iPhone 4 out quicker than say Verizon or Sprint.
‘Interestingly, both the new iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS support 3G at the 2100 MHz frequency and, from our understanding, the technical hurdle to support T-Mobile is minor compared to supporting CDMA technology at VZ and Sprint,’ said Shaw Wu.
Apple needs to start thinking about other networks in the US to give US consumers more choice, having one network for such a popular smartphone is restrictive as many people don’t want to go to AT&T for whatever reason.
Apple has a different policy here in the UK, the iPhone 4 will be available on a total of 5 networks, which gives customers plenty of choice and also encourages competition between the carriers.
