Intel has shown off a new tiny motherboard, much smaller than the previous mini-ITX system motherboards, called NUC or Next Unit of Computing. This tiny motherboard measures just 4 inches by 4 inches, which is significantly smaller compared to the 6.7 inch by 6.7 inch size of the mini-ITX motherboards.
This new NUC motherboard will work with Intel’s Core i3 mobile processor, but could apparently also handle more powerful processors as long as the power consumption and heat generation isn’t too high.
Features and Specifications
The new Intel NUC motherboard has been designed for applications like digital signage, and it comes with two RAM SO-DIMM slots, HDMI, two mini PCIe slots, USB 3.0, WiFi, Bluetooth, and even Thunderbolt. This array of features makes it a versatile option for various compact computing needs. The inclusion of Thunderbolt is particularly noteworthy as it allows for high-speed data transfer and connectivity with a wide range of peripherals.
Additionally, the NUC motherboard supports dual-channel memory, which can significantly enhance performance for tasks that require high-speed data processing. The two mini PCIe slots provide flexibility for adding components such as SSDs or additional network cards, making it a highly customizable solution.
Potential Applications and Market Impact
The compact size and robust feature set of the NUC motherboard open up a plethora of potential applications. Beyond digital signage, it could be used in home theater PCs (HTPCs), small form factor desktops, and even in embedded systems for industrial use. Its small footprint makes it ideal for environments where space is at a premium but performance cannot be compromised.
For example, in the realm of digital signage, the NUC motherboard can be integrated into slim displays to provide dynamic content in retail stores, airports, and other public spaces. In the home, it can serve as the backbone of a powerful yet unobtrusive media center, capable of streaming high-definition content and running various applications seamlessly.
There are no details as yet on when these new NUC motherboards will be available and also no details on how much they will cost. However, given Intel’s track record of innovation and market penetration, it is likely that these motherboards will be competitively priced to attract a wide range of users, from hobbyists to professional system integrators.
