We’ve seen a number of rumors suggesting that HTC is working on a smartwatch. They popped up a number of times in the past few weeks, but it seems we may not see it very soon.
HTC America’s head Jason Mackenzie confirmed to Re/code that the company is working on a wearable device, but it’s not ready for public at the moment. He did say that they planned to launch it soon, but it seems they require more time to perfect the smartwatch, and differentiate it from their competitors.
“We had originally planned to have a wearable launch in this time frame,” HTC Americas head Jason Mackenzie told Re/code. “It ended up just not being ready.”
HTC’s Dre Bamford also mentioned on the current wearable industry that there are a lot of wearables in the market, but they don’t have a compelling feature which may attract users to shift their focus to wearables.
HTC’s Creative Labs team head Drew Bamford further said, “We’ve seen a lot of general purpose wearables come to market. There’s not a strong reason to wear one every day. When we come to market with our product we want to make sure the product has a strong point of view and there is a really compelling reason to strap it on your wrist.”
“We think the strategy we were working on will get us there, but we want to take our time and get it right,” Bamford said. “We honestly don’t think anyone has gotten it right.”
There you go folks, don’t expect a smartwatch from the Taiwanese OEM this year. This also goes in line with a previous rumor that HTC is planning to launch a smartwatch in early-2015. We’ll update you as soon as any other information comes up.
