Better known as an Air Cruiser, it’s supposed to do the grunt flying for smaller aircraft—by flying permanently! Apparently the aviation scene if full of oddball but really awesome concepts like this. The Air Cruiser has gone into some vogue after a leading online publication revealed a few gentlemen entranced with the idea. Seen below is an artist’s rendition that looks like a cross between a morbidly obese jumbo jet and a Star Destroyer. Yikes!
Foremost among the Air Cruiser partisans is a UK-based engineer/propulsion researcher Bhupendra Khandelwal who has gone out of his way to devise a feasible plan for deploying such craft along travel routes. Think sea based aircraft carriers that are midair 24/7. In fact, go think Sky Captain or SHIELD from the Avengers.
Mr. Khandelwal can’t be hailed as the godfather of nuclear powered aircraft though. It’s an old concept that only went so far as testing back in the early years of the Cold War. The technology never caught on but it has apparently regained new fans in the aviation industry. So expect a lot of low yield nuclear-powered aircraft concepts to start appearing places.
But nuclear powered-anything isn’t what it’s cut out to e though. While we like to think it’s the ultimate in energy-efficient fuel, the resulting nuclear waste is a major drawback.
As always, the future that we conceive through our imagination is breathtaking. Unfortunately the future we arrive at tends to suck, like right now.
