Ah, vending machines, the eternal dispensers of much goodness. Last week we were almost raving (and a little skeptical) about Shanghai Hairy Crab, this time an American inventor has made it a personal crusade to save us with an eco-friendly vending machine called H.U.M.A.N.
In case you’re wondering, the name stands for “helping unite man and nutrition.” If you find that a bit too wholesome and positive to handle, get a load of this: H.U.M.A.N. exclusively serves locally grown fruit and homemade health food like granola bars (Mmmm, granola bars *drools). The clincher is the touchscreen-operated machine itself is energy efficient and low maintenance in accordance with its inventor’s environmental ethos.
A part-time snow boarding champ and biomedical engineer, inventor Sean Kelly thinks having one of his H.U.M.A.N.s in a mall or grocery makes a huge difference in the lives of its customers, who can avail of healthy food thru a machine built to perform more efficiently than its cousins selling hot coffee and candy. The secret is the engineering: Kelly made sure he built it to consume 30% less power without compromising the insulation. The food is another factor. To curb on fuel-consuming distribution and supply, Kelly wants to source local fruit growers for fresh fruit and home-prepared snacks.
As Kelly himself put it, “Vending machines…are everywhere. They’re the perfect lead domino.” By this he means changing the way we eat for the better. Though there’s no word yet if spinach pizza is available yet, we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
