When Google announced the Nexus 7 there was one thing they forgot to mention, it would appear that the new Nexus 7 features a built in smart cover sensor just like the Apple iPad.

The video below shows a new owner of a Nexus 7 tablet testing out this feature with a magnet, and as you can see from the video when the magnet is placed near the tablets display it lights up, exactly like the iPad.

Nexus 7

Asus, who build the Nexus 7 for Google recently announced some new covers for the device, although they didn’t give any specific details, so we suspect that the new covers will work with this feature on the Nexus 7.

Apple has a patent for their Smart Cover design on the iPad 2 and 3, although it isn’t clear as yet whether Google’s new smart cover feature is significantly different than Apples’, we wonder if this will be one of Apple’s future lawsuits.
