Apple recently released their first beta of iOS 12.2, and now some new devices have been discovered in the software. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered references to new iPads and also a new iPod.
We recently heard that Apple would be launching a new iPod Touch, and references to this device have been discovered with the model identifier 9,1. This is most likely the new iPod we heard about recently. The new iPod Touch is expected to be a significant upgrade from its predecessor, potentially focusing on gaming capabilities, enhanced performance, and improved storage options. This could make it a popular choice among younger users and those looking for a dedicated media and gaming device without the need for cellular connectivity.
New iPads on the Horizon
There are also references to four new iPads, listed as the iPad 11,1, iPad 11,2, iPad 11,3, and iPad 11,4. These references include both WiFi-only and cellular models of Apple’s iPad. We presume these are for the new entry-level iPad. The entry-level iPad has been a popular choice for students and budget-conscious consumers, offering a balance of performance and affordability.
It is not clear yet what upgrades the entry-level iPad will come with. Whether or not it will feature Apple’s Face ID technology remains to be seen. Historically, the entry-level iPad has not included the latest cutting-edge features found in the Pro models, such as Face ID or the latest processors. However, it often receives incremental updates that improve its overall performance and user experience.
Speculations and Expectations
In theory, iOS 12.2 references four new iPads in WiFi and Cellular variants (perhaps mini, and 9.7″?), all without Face ID, and a (seventh-gen?) iPod touch with no Touch ID nor Face ID. This suggests that Apple may be focusing on keeping costs down for these models by not including the more expensive Face ID technology. Instead, these devices might continue to use the traditional Touch ID fingerprint sensor or even rely solely on passcode security.

The absence of Face ID in these new devices could indicate that Apple is reserving this feature for its higher-end models, such as the iPad Pro. This would allow the company to differentiate its product lines more clearly and offer a range of devices that cater to different market segments.
Additionally, the new iPads might come with other enhancements such as improved battery life, better display technology, and possibly support for the Apple Pencil. These features would make the entry-level iPad more appealing to a broader audience, including students, professionals, and casual users.
As we await more information, it’s exciting to speculate about the potential features and improvements that these new devices might bring. Apple’s continued innovation in the tablet and portable media player markets ensures that consumers have access to a wide range of high-quality devices that meet their diverse needs.
