Point Grey has added a new addition to their range in the form of the Flea3 FL3-U3, which is a range of miniature cameras equipped with USB 3.0 and a variety of low-cost, high-speed, CMOS image sensors to choose from.
The CMOS image sensors available from the Flea3 range from 1.3 up to 8.8 megapixels with a frame rate of around 21fps. This includes Sony’s new IMX1221 Exmor R sensor, which is known for its exceptional low-light performance and high dynamic range. The inclusion of such advanced sensors makes the Flea3 an attractive option for a variety of applications, from industrial inspection to scientific research.
Compact Design and Advanced Features
The Flea3 measures just 29 x 29 x 30 mm, making it one of the smallest cameras in its class. Despite its compact size, it has been designed to provide a host of features, including enhanced opto-isolated GPIO, an on-camera frame buffer, non-volatile user data storage, new trigger modes, and improved imaging performance. These features make the Flea3 highly versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications.
Enhanced opto-isolated GPIO allows for better integration with other hardware systems, ensuring reliable and noise-free operation. The on-camera frame buffer helps in managing high-speed data transfer, reducing the risk of data loss. Non-volatile user data storage enables users to save settings and configurations directly on the camera, making it easier to deploy in different environments without the need for reconfiguration.
Applications and Use Cases
The Flea3’s advanced features and compact design make it suitable for a variety of applications. In industrial settings, it can be used for machine vision tasks such as quality control, inspection, and automation. Its high frame rate and resolution make it ideal for capturing fast-moving objects with great detail.
In scientific research, the Flea3 can be used for microscopy, where its small size allows it to be easily integrated into existing setups. The high dynamic range and low-light performance of the Sony IMX1221 Exmor R sensor make it particularly useful for capturing detailed images in challenging lighting conditions.
The Flea3 is also suitable for use in robotics, where its compact size and advanced features can be leveraged for tasks such as navigation, object recognition, and manipulation. The camera’s ability to operate in various lighting conditions and its high-speed data transfer capabilities make it an excellent choice for real-time applications.
The Flea3 is now available to purchase for around $945. More information on this tiny USB 3.0 Camera can be found over on the Point Grey website.
