De La Soul’s catalog of music is not available to buy on iTunes, this is mainly due to label and sample clearance issues, and now the hip hop legends have decided to make their entire catalog available for free today.
De La Soul will be making all of their albums available to download for free for 25 hours from 11AM ET today, they are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising.
“It’s about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it,” De La Soul member Posdnuos tells Rolling Stone. “It’s been too long where our fans haven’t had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them.”
The Legacy of De La Soul
De La Soul, consisting of members Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo, has been a pioneering force in the hip hop industry since their inception in the late 1980s. Their debut album, “3 Feet High and Rising,” is often credited with introducing a new, more eclectic and positive style to the genre. The album’s innovative use of samples and skits set it apart from other hip hop records of the time, making it a critical and commercial success. Over the years, De La Soul has continued to push the boundaries of hip hop, experimenting with different sounds and collaborating with a wide range of artists.
Despite their influence and popularity, De La Soul’s music has been notoriously difficult to find on digital platforms like iTunes. This is largely due to the complex web of sample clearances required for their tracks. Many of their songs feature samples from a variety of sources, and obtaining the rights to these samples has proven to be a significant hurdle. This has left many fans frustrated and unable to access the group’s full catalog.
A Gift to the Fans
In an effort to address this issue and give back to their loyal fanbase, De La Soul has decided to make their entire catalog available for free download for a limited time. From 11AM ET today, fans will have 25 hours to download all of the group’s albums, including classics like “De La Soul Is Dead,” “Buhloone Mindstate,” and “Stakes Is High.” This gesture is not only a celebration of the 25th anniversary of “3 Feet High and Rising,” but also a way for the group to show their appreciation for the fans who have supported them over the years.
“It’s about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it,” De La Soul member Posdnuos tells Rolling Stone. “It’s been too long where our fans haven’t had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them.”
This move has been met with widespread excitement and gratitude from fans, many of whom have taken to social media to express their appreciation. The free download event is a rare opportunity for both longtime fans and newcomers to explore the full breadth of De La Soul’s work, from their early hits to their more recent releases.
