Originally unveiled back in January, the new Disney Infinity cross-platform gaming toybox was expected to be launched in June 2013.
However, Disney has now announced that the Disney Infinity game launch has been delayed until late in August 2013. Watch the video after the jump to learn more about the Disney Infinity project and see it in action.
Disney Infinity will now launch internationally on August 20th and in the United States on August 18th. This delay has been met with mixed reactions from fans eagerly awaiting the game. The game provides Disney fans the ability to integrate Disney characters as collectible figures with digital gaming, and bring characters from various Disney and Pixar films to play together in a virtual “Toy Box” across multiple platforms.
Features and Gameplay
Disney Infinity offers a unique blend of physical and digital play. Players can collect physical figurines of their favorite Disney and Pixar characters, which can then be placed on the Infinity Base to bring them into the game. This innovative approach allows for a highly interactive experience, where characters from different franchises can interact in ways never seen before. For example, you could have Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean” teaming up with Buzz Lightyear from “Toy Story” to complete missions and explore worlds.
The game features two main modes: Play Sets and Toy Box. Play Sets are story-driven experiences that are specific to each character’s universe, while Toy Box mode allows for a more open-ended, sandbox-style gameplay where players can create their own adventures and worlds. This dual-mode approach ensures that there is something for everyone, whether you prefer structured gameplay or creative freedom.
Reasons for the Delay
The head of Disney Interactive, John Pleasants, explained that the Disney Infinity release date has been pushed back at the request of retailers, who would like to make more from the holiday season sales than during mid-year. Pleasants elaborated, “We think it’s good to be first and really lean into the most important selling season of the year.” This strategic move aims to capitalize on the increased consumer spending that occurs during the holiday season, thereby maximizing the game’s sales potential.
Moreover, the delay also allows Disney Interactive more time to fine-tune the game and ensure that it meets the high standards expected by fans and critics alike. Given the ambitious nature of Disney Infinity, which aims to integrate multiple beloved franchises into a cohesive gaming experience, additional development time could be crucial for ironing out any technical issues and enhancing gameplay features.
The anticipation for Disney Infinity is palpable, and the delay, while disappointing to some, is likely a wise decision in the long run. The extra time will not only allow for a more polished final product but also align the release with a period of heightened consumer activity. As the launch date approaches, fans can look forward to more previews and updates that will provide further insights into what promises to be a groundbreaking addition to the world of interactive entertainment.
