Instagram is testing out a new stand alone direct messaging app called Direct. The new app is apparently coming to Android and iOS today in a number of countries. The list of countries includes Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay.
If you install this new Direct app then your Instagram inbox appears in this app and it can only be used in the direct app. Here is what Instagram has to say about the new app.
“We want Instagram to be a place for all of your moments, and private sharing with close friends is an important part of that,” Hemal Shah, an Instagram product manager, told me. “Direct has grown within Instagram over the past four years, but we can make it even better if it stands on its own. We can push the boundaries to create the fastest and most creative space for private sharing when Direct is a camera-first, standalone app.”
As this is a test it is only being made available in some countries, we presume it will be rolled out to more if it becomes popular.
