Are Amazon thinking of releasing a free Kindle? The price of the Amazon Kindle has fallen quite a bit since it was originally announced, and if it continues to fall at the same rate it could end up being free.
When the Kindle first went on sale it was for $350, the price has fallen dramatically since then, and if you have a look at the graph below, you could get the impression that Amazon are on target to launch a free Kindle.
In January Amazon offered select customers a free Kindle of sorts – they had to pay for it, but if they didn’t like it they could get a full refund and keep the device. It turns out that was just a test run for a much more ambitious program. A reliable source tells us Amazon wants to give a free Kindle to every Amazon Prime subscriber.
Offering a free Kindle could end up being a good move for Amazon, as we suspect that the majority of their profit on Kindle’s comes from eBook sales and not actual sales of the Kindle devices.
