We have seen quite a few different retro PC case mods here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is the ‘Cobra-matic’ from modder Alvin.
Alvin turned a 1951 Zenith H664 Cobra-matic phonograph into a fully functional PC, which looks amazing, check out the photos below.

Design and Aesthetic Appeal
The Cobra-matic PC case mod is a stunning example of how vintage aesthetics can be seamlessly integrated with modern technology. The 1951 Zenith H664 Cobra-matic phonograph, known for its sleek design and classic appeal, serves as the perfect shell for this unique PC. Alvin has managed to preserve the original look of the phonograph while incorporating the necessary components to make it a fully functional computer. The result is a beautiful blend of old and new, a piece of art that is both functional and visually appealing.
The exterior of the Cobra-matic retains the original wood finish and brass accents, giving it a timeless look. The phonograph’s original knobs and dials have been repurposed to control the PC’s functions, adding to the authenticity of the design. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this mod, from the placement of the components to the choice of materials used.
Technical Specifications and Performance
Inside this retro case mod, there is an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, an XFX GeForce 7950GT graphics card, 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. While these specifications may not be cutting-edge by today’s standards, they are more than sufficient for a variety of tasks, including gaming and multimedia playback. The choice of components reflects Alvin’s desire to create a performance PC that is also quiet and efficient.
The use of air cooling instead of water cooling is a deliberate choice to maintain the quiet operation of the PC. Alvin considered using a brass and copper fire extinguisher or a copper toilet tank float as a reservoir for water cooling but ultimately decided against it. The air cooling system, combined with the spacious interior of the phonograph case, ensures that the components remain cool and operate efficiently.
The plan? This is a gaming, performance PC, not too cutting edge as I want to keep it as quiet as possible. I considered water cooling but am going to stick with air. Although I do have a wicked brass and copper fire extinguisher or a copper toilet tank float that would work as cool reservoir. So yeah, like Retromod, brass and copper will play a part as will more “tube-punk” accents.
The choice of materials and the overall design philosophy reflect a “tube-punk” aesthetic, a subgenre of steampunk that emphasizes the use of vintage electronics and materials. The brass and copper accents, combined with the original wood finish of the phonograph, create a unique look that sets the Cobra-matic apart from other PC case mods.
