As well as announcing the launch date of iOS 5, Apple has also announced that its new iCloud service which replaces its MobileMe service will be available from the 12th of October.
Features of Apple’s iCloud Service
Apple’s iCloud service will sync your photos and videos from the camera roll as well as app data and your iOS device settings, plus documents from iWork apps and other apps. This means that when you change a document on one iOS device, it will be synced with iCloud and your other iOS devices automatically. This seamless integration ensures that you always have the latest version of your documents, photos, and settings, no matter which device you are using.
One of the standout features of iCloud is its ability to back up your entire device. This includes not just your photos and videos, but also your app data, device settings, and even your home screen layout. In the event that you need to restore your device or set up a new one, iCloud makes the process incredibly simple and stress-free.
iTunes Match and Storage Options
iCloud will also come with iTunes Match, a service that we have talked about previously. iTunes Match allows you to store your entire music library in iCloud, including songs that you have not purchased from iTunes. This service will cost $24.99 a year, which is a small price to pay for the convenience of having your entire music library available on all your devices.
The actual iCloud service will be free and will come with 5GB of storage for mail, photos, documents, and more. While 5GB may not seem like a lot, it is important to note that this storage does not include the space used by apps, books, music, and TV shows purchased from iTunes. These items are stored in iCloud for free, allowing you to use your 5GB for other important data.
For users who need more storage, Apple offers additional storage plans. You can upgrade to 50GB, 200GB, or even 2TB of storage for a monthly fee. This flexibility ensures that iCloud can meet the needs of both casual users and power users alike.
Another exciting feature of iCloud is its integration with Find My iPhone. This feature allows you to locate your lost or stolen device using the iCloud website or the Find My iPhone app. You can also remotely lock or erase your device to protect your personal information. This added layer of security gives users peace of mind knowing that their data is safe, even if their device is not.
In addition to these features, iCloud also supports Family Sharing. This allows up to six family members to share purchases from iTunes, iBooks, and the App Store without sharing accounts. Family members can also share photo albums, calendars, and even their location with each other. This makes it easy to stay connected and organized as a family.
