Apple introduced their own SIM cards with the new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3, which give users the ability to switch their SIM cards easily. In the US, you’ll be able to select AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint as your carrier on the tablet, but there’s a catch here if you opt for AT&T.
If you select AT&T as your preferred network, the Apple SIM will get locked to AT&T, meaning that you’ll not be able to switch to other networks if you decide to switch your carriers.
The tablet is unlocked, but if you decide to switch from AT&T to Sprint or T-Mobile, you’ll have to get a new SIM card from the Apple Store, and use it on another carrier. The case is different if you choose the other two carriers — you’ll be able to switch from T-Mobile to Sprint, or Sprint to T-Mobile, but not after you select AT&T as your carrier.
AT&T spokesperson also confirm this news to the folks at Re/code. “With us you can change carriers with this iPad any time you want,” he said. “It is an unlocked device. … All [you] have to do is switch out the SIM in the device so it works on another carrier.”
Verizon isn’t in the list of carriers, but it could be in the future. There’s no word on why it’s not there in the list of options on the new iPads.
