Apple and the FBI were due in court today over the iPhone unlocking case which has been in the news so much, but now the FBI has put the case on hold as they say they can unlock the handset without Apple’s help.
Th FBI have filed a new motion with the court stating that an outside party has demonstrated to them a method of unlocking the device without Apple’s help.
They will now test the method out and if it works they will not need assistance from Apple, they have told the court that they will file a status report by April 5th.
The court has now agreed to postpone the hearing until the FBI investigates this new method, if the FBI can unlock the device without Apple, then the case between FBI and Apple will probably be dropped.
Whilst this may help Apple in the short term, in the long run, the authorities and technology company’s will be in a similar situation in the future, especially with many of them increasing encryption on their services.
If the FBI are unable to unlock the handset using this new method, then the case with Apple could start up again, I guess we will find out on April the 5th.
