Nokia used to be the world’s largest mobile phone maker. Previously, Nokia had sold more mobile phones than any other company each year for a period of 14 years. However, Samsung knocked them off the top spot, and they have now kept their place at the top for the third quarter in a row.
Samsung shipped a total of 105.4 million mobile phones worldwide for the quarter to the 21st of September. This is up 21 percent from the previous year, and they now have a 23.7 percent share of the mobile phone market.

Samsung’s Rise to Dominance
Samsung’s rise to dominance in the mobile phone market can be attributed to several factors. One of the key reasons is their ability to innovate and adapt to changing market trends. Samsung has consistently introduced new technologies and features in their smartphones, such as high-resolution displays, advanced cameras, and powerful processors. This has helped them attract a large customer base and stay ahead of their competitors.
Another factor contributing to Samsung’s success is their extensive marketing and distribution network. Samsung has a strong presence in both developed and emerging markets, allowing them to reach a wide range of consumers. Nokia’s Struggles in the Smartphone Market
While Samsung has been thriving, Nokia has been facing challenges in the smartphone market. One of the main reasons for Nokia’s decline is their late entry into the smartphone segment. By the time Nokia started focusing on smartphones, companies like Apple and Samsung had already established themselves as leaders in the market.
Nokia’s decision to adopt the Windows Phone operating system also did not work in their favor. While Windows Phone had some unique features, it struggled to gain traction among consumers and developers. This limited the availability of apps and hindered the overall user experience, making it difficult for Nokia to compete with Android and iOS devices.
In addition, Nokia’s hardware design and features were often seen as outdated compared to their competitors. While other companies were introducing sleek and modern designs, Nokia’s smartphones were perceived as bulky and less appealing. This further contributed to their declining market share.
Despite these challenges, Nokia has been making efforts to regain its position in the market. They have shifted their focus to Android smartphones and have introduced new models with improved designs and features. However, it remains to be seen if these efforts will be enough to regain their lost glory.
As well as being the top mobile phone maker, Samsung is also the top smartphone maker, selling more smartphones than its rivals, whereas Nokia is having trouble getting its smartphones and Windows Phone off the ground compared to other companies.
