As well as making available Windows 11 preloaded on new computers Microsoft will also start rolling out a free upgrade to Windows 11 to eligible Windows 10 PCs. “Windows 11 is ready to empower your productivity and inspire your creativity” writes Microsoft.
The free upgrade to Windows 11 will start on October the fifth and will be phased in and measured with a “focus on quality” with all eligible Windows 10 devices being offered a free Windows 11 upgrade by mid-2022, explains Microsoft. When a Windows 11 upgrade is made available for your Windows 10 PC Windows Update will notify you and provide an option to download it. Microsoft has also allowing you to manually check to see if Windows 11 is available for your Windows computer by selecting Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
“Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022.”
