VIA has launched a new development board in the form of the VIA VAB-600 Pico-ITX, which has been created to allow developers to create low-power, small form-factor PCs or embedded devices.
The VIA VAB-600 Pico-ITX board is powered by an 800 MHz VIA Wondermedia WM8950 ARM Cortex-A9 processor, supported by 1GB DDR3 SDRAM, with Mali-400 graphics.
Key Features and Specifications
Other features of the VIA VAB-600 Pico-ITX board include 4GB of onboard storage and 1x USB 2.0 port, 2 x mini USB, GPIO pins, 1 x mini PCIe slot, 1 x Ethernet jack, and optional support for a touchscreen, SIM card, 3G, or WiFi, when required. This makes the board highly versatile for a range of applications, from simple embedded systems to more complex IoT devices.
The board’s compact size, measuring just 10 cm x 7.2 cm, makes it ideal for space-constrained applications. Despite its small footprint, the VIA VAB-600 does not compromise on performance or connectivity options. The inclusion of GPIO pins and a mini PCIe slot allows for further expansion and customization, enabling developers to tailor the board to their specific needs.
“Based on the ultra compact Pico-ITX form factor, measuring 10 cm x 7.2 cm, the VIA VAB-600 features an 800MHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor and combines a wide operating temperature range (0°C up to 60°C) with extremely low power consumption and optional 3G connectivity to fuel in-vehicle innovation as well as a wide range of mobile and healthcare applications.”
Applications and Use Cases
The VIA VAB-600 Pico-ITX board is particularly well-suited for a variety of applications. In the automotive industry, its low power consumption and optional 3G connectivity make it an excellent choice for in-vehicle systems. These could include infotainment systems, navigation units, or even advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
In the healthcare sector, the board’s small size and robust performance can be leveraged for portable medical devices, patient monitoring systems, and telemedicine solutions. The optional touchscreen support further enhances its utility in interactive healthcare applications.
For industrial applications, the wide operating temperature range (0°C to 60°C) ensures reliable performance in harsh environments. This makes the VIA VAB-600 ideal for use in factory automation, robotics, and other industrial control systems.
The board’s support for WiFi and 3G connectivity also opens up possibilities in the realm of IoT (Internet of Things). Developers can create smart home devices, environmental monitoring systems, and other connected solutions that require reliable, low-power computing.
