Verizon has unveiled its currently developing a new tablet application called ‘What’s Hot’ to allow viewers to watch live TV from their tablet devices.
Viewers using the new app will be able to pick and choose amongst live shows being broadcast locally, with built-in sorting options via program type, sports or news, for example.
It is expected that the new app will be first launched on Android and then closely followed by an iPad application, that Verizon hopes to have approved by Apple by the end of the year.
Features and Functionality
The ‘What’s Hot’ app is designed to enhance the viewing experience by providing a user-friendly interface that allows for easy navigation through various live TV channels. The sorting options are particularly useful for viewers who have specific interests, such as sports enthusiasts or news junkies. By categorizing content, the app ensures that users can quickly find what they are looking for without having to scroll through endless channels.
Moreover, the app will include a feature that highlights trending shows, making it easier for users to discover popular content. This feature is expected to be particularly appealing to younger audiences who are always on the lookout for the next big thing in entertainment.
Future Developments and Licensing
Verizon says there won’t be any extra charges to watch TV in the home, but that it’s talking to media companies about licensing content to be viewed while roaming with your device and is currently in talks with CNN and Time Warner. This means that while users can enjoy a plethora of content at home without any additional costs, there might be some premium content available for those who wish to watch TV on the go.
The company is also exploring the possibility of integrating social media features into the app. This would allow users to share what they are watching with friends and family, as well as see what others are tuning into. Such features could make the app more interactive and engaging, fostering a sense of community among users.
Verizon have also released details of a new feature for Fios customers to be introduced later this year, called a Flexview service. That will allow films to be watched on up to five devices with them stored in the cloud and able to be rented for as little as $2 a film. This service aims to provide more flexibility and convenience for users, enabling them to watch their favorite movies anytime, anywhere.
The Flexview service is expected to be a game-changer in the way people consume media. By storing films in the cloud, users can access their rented movies from multiple devices, eliminating the need to download large files or worry about storage space. This is particularly beneficial for families or households with multiple users, as it allows everyone to watch their preferred content without any conflicts.
In addition to these features, Verizon is also considering the introduction of personalized recommendations based on viewing history and preferences. This would make the app even more user-centric, providing tailored content suggestions that align with individual tastes.
Overall, the ‘What’s Hot’ app and the Flexview service represent significant advancements in the way we consume television and movies. With these innovations, Verizon is poised to offer a more dynamic and versatile viewing experience, catering to the diverse needs and preferences of modern audiences.
