Tesla recently completed its acquisition of SolarCity and now the company has shown off one of the projects it has been working on, powering a whole island with solar power.
Ta’u is a small island in American Samoa that has around 600 residents, power was previously provided by diesel generators and now it is provided by solar panels and batteries.
Tesla have setup a micro grid on Ta’u which is made up of 5,328 solar panels and also 60 Tesla Powerpack batteries to store the energy generated.
The panels generate enough electricity to recharge the batteries to full in just seven hours and the batteries can store enough power for the 600 residents to use for three days.
