It looks like Sony Ericsson has new NFC-enabled Android smartphones in the works, as NXP Semiconductors N.V. has just announced that they will be supplying Sony Ericsson with the NXP PN65 NFC chip for future Android smartphones.
There are no details as yet on how exactly Sony Ericsson will use the technology in future NFC Android devices, and no details of any specific models in the works as yet.
“Building on Sony Ericsson’s leadership in Android and mobile gaming, the integration of near field communication into our Android-based Xperia™ portfolio is another step in delivering the most entertaining smartphones,” said Jan Uddenfeldt, Chief Technology Officer at Sony Ericsson. “NFC offers our consumers the ability to broaden their communication experience beyond the phone, and we are poised to drive the development of new, exciting and creative entertainment experiences.”
Potential Uses of NFC Technology
NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices to communicate when they are within close proximity, typically less than 4 cm. This technology has a wide range of applications that can significantly enhance the user experience on smartphones. For instance, NFC can be used for contactless payments, allowing users to make transactions simply by tapping their phone on a payment terminal. This is already popular in many parts of the world with services like Google Pay and Apple Pay.
Another exciting application of NFC is in the realm of data sharing. Users can quickly exchange contact information, photos, or even larger files by simply bringing their phones close together. This can be particularly useful in social settings or business environments where quick and efficient data transfer is needed.
Future Prospects and Innovations
The integration of NFC technology into Sony Ericsson’s Xperia™ portfolio opens up numerous possibilities for innovation. One potential area is in mobile gaming. Imagine being able to unlock special game features or levels by tapping your phone against a physical object or another phone. This could add a new layer of interactivity and excitement to mobile gaming, making it even more engaging for users.
Moreover, NFC can also be used for smart home applications. Users could control various smart home devices, such as lights, thermostats, and security systems, with a simple tap of their phone. This would make managing a smart home more intuitive and user-friendly.
