Skype is an excellent IM application with dedicated mobile applications for all major platforms. Recently, the folks at Skype pushed an update for its iOS application, bumping it to version 4.17 and introduces many new features and enhancements.
The most notable one is the push notifications. With the latest update, all Skype notifications will be pushed to your iOS device using Apple’s push notification network. This means that the notifications will show up on your notification center and on your lock screen as expected.
With this version, all your chat messages will now be pushed to your iPhones and iPads using Apple’s push notification network. This means we can deliver your messages in a timely way which will then show up in your notification center and on your lock screen as expected. As long as you are signed into Skype, your private (1:1) chat messages will be delivered just like any other push notification.
Other than the support for push notifications, the latest Skype 4.17 comes with the following features and enhancements:
- Two way HD video calling is now supported on the iPad Air and iPad Mini Retina.
- Minor layout changes on both the iPhone and iPad.
- Removed the offline timer setting to improve the push notifications experience
Simply head over to the App Store and download the updated Skype application for your device. The application requires iOS 5 or later and supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPod Touch (3/4/5th gen), all generations of iPad, iPad Mini, iPad Air and iPad Mini Retina.
