Today, Sharp has unveiled details on its two latest Android tablets, the Sharp Galapagos tablets. The tablets come in two sizes: the mobile version with a 5.5-inch 1024 x 600 LCD display and the Home version with a 10.8-inch 1366 x 800 LCD display. Check out the demo video after the jump.
Specifications and Features
Unfortunately, specifications of the devices are still a little thin on the ground, but both tablets are equipped with Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g), allowing users to surf the web, play games, and communicate with other owners through a pre-installed ‘social app’. This app aims to enhance the user experience by fostering a community of Galapagos tablet users who can share tips, tricks, and content recommendations.
The smaller 5.5-inch model is designed for portability, making it an ideal choice for users who need a device that can easily fit into a bag or even a large pocket. On the other hand, the 10.8-inch model is geared towards home use, providing a larger screen that is perfect for reading, watching videos, and browsing the internet.
Galapagos e-Bookstore Service
The Galapagos e-bookstore service is scheduled to start in Japan in December. Sharp says that buyers of the reader can expect a total of 30,000 newspapers, magazines, and books at the time of launch. This extensive library aims to cater to a wide range of interests and preferences, from daily news readers to avid book lovers.
In addition to the vast selection of reading materials, the e-bookstore will feature a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to browse, purchase, and download content. Sharp is also planning to offer subscription services for newspapers and magazines, ensuring that users always have access to the latest issues without having to manually download them each time.
Pricing and Availability
Prices and launch dates for the Sharp Galapagos eReader tablets have yet to be released by Sharp. However, given the features and the anticipated content library, these tablets are expected to be competitively priced to attract a wide range of consumers. The launch in Japan will likely set the stage for a global rollout, depending on the initial reception and demand.
The introduction of the Sharp Galapagos tablets marks an exciting development in the eReader and tablet market. With their unique blend of portability, functionality, and access to a vast library of content, these devices are poised to offer a compelling alternative to other tablets currently available. Whether you’re a casual reader or a tech enthusiast, the Galapagos tablets promise to deliver a versatile and enjoyable user experience.
