Samsung just can’t keep itself out of the headlines today, as no sooner was it done announcing it was selling off its hard disk business than it fired back a response to Apple’s lawsuit. They might even have done it at the same time, it was that close. As expected, they’re saying Apple have left them “no choice but [to] respond strongly.” What was unexpected was exactly how strongly they can respond, as Samsung seems to have more than a bit of leverage.
It turns out Apple has spent $5.7 billion buying Samsung components last year alone, only outdone by Sony. Not only that, but rifling through some of their own patents, Samsung figures they might have found a few Apple is merrily infringing on as well. The scene is pretty much set for a pocketbook showdown which will no doubt take place at some point after the legal sabre-rattling and we’re sure Samsung will be back to selling Apple billions and billions’ worth of components in no time.
