During the Samsung IFA 2014 press event today in Berlin, the company took the wraps off its new Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset that has been developed in conjunction with Oculus VR.
Oculus VR is the company that re-ignited consumers interest in virtual reality technology via its Kickstarter campaign, which ultimately saw the company purchased by Facebook recently for $2 billion.
The Samsung Gear VR has been designed to be used with the new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and its 5.7 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display. Providing an untethered VR experience for users to enjoy. Samsung explains :
“With the Gear VR Innovator Edition, users can sit in the best seat of a theater, can be on-stage of a performance with full 360 3D video, and can enjoy gaming like it’s never been seen before – inside the stunning worlds where imagination becomes reality. Samsung’s industry leading Super AMOLED display technology and cutting-edge Oculus-driven technologies fuse to create an experience that surprises and delights – all on a mobile device.”
John Carmack, CTO of Oculus explains :
“We are thrilled to reveal the Gear VR Innovator Edition, a state-of-the-art mobile VR experience powered by Oculus,”-“The deep technical partnership with Samsung has enabled us to create a virtual reality headset with world class resolution and performance, all on a completely mobile platform.”
The Samsung Gear VR headset uses the latest Oculus Mobile SDK, together with variations of the Oculus Tracker and firmware built into the headset for extremely accurate, ultra low-latency 3DOF tracking, explains Oculus VR and its capable of viewing 60fps thanks to the Galaxy Note 4.
