It’s Apple’s 20th anniversary, and Jony Ive is teaming up with Marc Newson to auction a one-of-a-kind red Mac Pro in order to raise money for charity.
There’s no news on whether or not the color is the only difference being made, but, regardless of other changes, the machine is expected to sell for $40,000 to $60,000 simply due to its exclusivity.
Honestly, it’s a little much for a computer that’s set to sell for around $3,000 when it launches in December, but making something a one-of-a-kind will do that. I think $3,000 is unwarranted for the hardware you’re getting, but I guess if everyone learned how to build their own computers Mac would probably fall to the wayside altogether.
At least the money is going to a good cause, that’s a good enough reason in-and-of itself for someone with money to burn to pay a ridiculous sum for the computer. The red color does make the cylindrical design look good.
However you dress it, it’s still a Mac and designed as more of a status symbol for the technologically challenged. That isn’t to say it’s a bad computer – you’ll be able to do whatever you want on it – it’s just overpriced.
