PocketBook has unfortunately leaked, apparently by accident, that it will be launching a new eReader tablet that is expected to be arriving in Q3 2011.
PocketBook will unveil the new eReader at CES 2011 and is reportedly equipped with a color display that costs around 1.5x what a monochrome E Ink panel would be. As the name suggests, the eReader will use Qualcomm’s mirasol e-paper technology.
From the initial details that are still a little scarce at the moment, the screen is thought to have a refresh rate of 12 frames per second, probably making movie playing impossible as this requires 30 fps to accomplish playback.
Innovative Display Technology
The use of Qualcomm’s mirasol e-paper technology is a significant step forward in the eReader market. Unlike traditional E Ink displays, mirasol technology offers color and better visibility in bright light conditions. This technology mimics the way butterfly wings reflect light, providing a vibrant and energy-efficient display. This could potentially revolutionize the way we consume digital content on eReaders, making them more versatile and appealing to a broader audience.
Moreover, the color display opens up new possibilities for eReaders, such as reading magazines, comics, and educational materials that benefit from color illustrations. While the refresh rate of 12 frames per second may not support video playback, it is more than sufficient for reading and viewing static images.
Product Lineup at CES 2011
During the CES 2011 show, PocketBook will showcase six different product models:
- PocketBook Pro 602
- PocketBook Pro 902 – standard models
- PocketBook Pro 603
- PocketBook Pro 903 – premium class models
- PocketBook IQ701
- Mirasol – PocketBook’s newest model
The Pro series models, including the Pro 602 and Pro 902, are expected to cater to standard eReader users, offering reliable performance and essential features. The Pro 603 and Pro 903, being premium class models, will likely include additional functionalities such as enhanced connectivity options, better build quality, and possibly more advanced display technologies.
The PocketBook IQ701 is another intriguing addition to the lineup. While details are sparse, it is speculated to be a touchscreen tablet, potentially running on an Android operating system. This would position it as a competitor to other budget tablets in the market, offering a blend of eReader and tablet functionalities.
The highlight, however, remains the Mirasol model. With its advanced display technology, it is poised to attract significant attention from tech enthusiasts and early adopters. The combination of color e-paper and energy efficiency could set a new standard in the eReader industry.
As we await the official unveiling at CES 2011, the anticipation builds around how these new models will perform and how they will be received by the market. PocketBook’s strategic move to incorporate cutting-edge technology in their eReaders demonstrates their commitment to innovation and their desire to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
