Pebble smartwatches have been available in the U.S for quite some time, and now the company is launching the Pebble and Pebble Steel watches in the UK.
The Pebble smartwatch will retail for £100 and the Pebble Steel will retail for £180. Both devices will be sold through UK mobile carrier O2 and also through retailer Firebox.
The Journey of Pebble Smartwatches
The Pebble smartwatch started out as a Kickstarter project and managed to raise over $10 million on the crowdfunding website. This impressive feat made it one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns at the time. The device launched in 2013, and Pebble introduced the Pebble Steel in 2014, which featured a more premium design with a stainless steel body and leather strap options.
Pebble smartwatches quickly gained popularity due to their simplicity, long battery life, and compatibility with both iOS and Android devices. Unlike many other smartwatches that required frequent charging, Pebble watches could last up to a week on a single charge. This made them particularly appealing to users who were tired of constantly having to charge their devices.
Features and Functionality
Both the Pebble and Pebble Steel come with a range of features designed to enhance the user experience. They include:
– E-Paper Display: The Pebble watches use an e-paper display, which is easy to read in direct sunlight and consumes less power than traditional LCD screens.
– Notifications: Users can receive notifications for calls, texts, emails, and app alerts directly on their wrist.
– Customizable Watchfaces: Pebble offers a variety of watchfaces that users can download and customize to suit their style.
– Fitness Tracking: Basic fitness tracking features such as step counting and sleep monitoring are included.
– Water Resistance: Both models are water-resistant, making them suitable for use in the shower or while swimming.
Pebble now has around 130 employees, and their company has grown and taken on more funding since the original device launched. This growth has allowed Pebble to continue innovating and expanding their product line.
Expanding the Ecosystem
In addition to the hardware, Pebble has also focused on building a robust ecosystem of apps and integrations. The Pebble app store offers thousands of apps and watchfaces, ranging from fitness and health apps to games and productivity tools. This extensive app ecosystem has been a significant factor in Pebble’s success, as it allows users to tailor their smartwatch experience to their specific needs and preferences.
Moreover, Pebble has fostered a strong developer community by providing comprehensive development tools and resources. This has encouraged third-party developers to create innovative apps and watchfaces, further enriching the Pebble ecosystem.
You can find out more details about both Pebble devices over at the company’s official website. Both the Pebble and Pebble Steel will go on sale in the UK this month.
