O2 has confirmed the UK launch date of the Palm Pre. Starting from October 16th, 2009, O2 will be selling the Palm Pre in the UK.
The Palm Pre will be free to O2 customers who take out a 24-month contract, and to customers who take an 18-month contract on the £44.05 and above tariffs.
Customers who want to sign up to O2’s lower tariffs costing £29.38 and £34.26 a month will have to pay £96.89 for the Palm Pre.
Tariff Details and Additional Costs
All of the Palm Pre tariffs, much like the O2 iPhone ones, will come with unlimited UK data and WiFi. This is a significant advantage for users who rely heavily on internet connectivity for their daily tasks, whether it be for work, social media, or streaming services. The inclusion of unlimited data ensures that users can make the most out of their Palm Pre without worrying about exceeding data limits.
Additionally, O2 will also be selling the Palm Pre Touchstone Charging dock as an optional accessory, which will retail for £44.11. The Touchstone Charging dock is a wireless charger that allows users to charge their Palm Pre without the need for cables. This accessory is particularly useful for those who prefer a clutter-free charging experience and adds a touch of convenience to the overall user experience.
“There’s a lot of excitement about Palm Pre in Europe as we continue to expand Palm webOS products across new carriers and countries,” said Jon Rubinstein, chairman and chief executive officer, Palm, Inc. “We look forward to launching Palm Pre with O2 so people in the UK can see firsthand how Palm webOS offers a new and better smartphone experience.”
Market Competition and Consumer Expectations
It will be interesting to see how well the Palm Pre does in the UK, considering the cost of it and the fact that an 18-month or 24-month contract is the same as an 8GB iPhone 3G. The iPhone has already established a strong presence in the market, and the Palm Pre will need to offer compelling features to attract customers away from Apple’s ecosystem.
The Palm Pre is powered by Palm’s webOS, which is known for its intuitive user interface and multitasking capabilities. Unlike other operating systems, webOS allows users to manage multiple applications seamlessly, making it a strong contender for those who need to juggle various tasks simultaneously. The “cards” system in webOS is particularly praised for its ease of use, allowing users to switch between apps effortlessly.
Moreover, the Palm Pre comes with a physical keyboard, which is a feature that some users still prefer over virtual keyboards. This could be a deciding factor for professionals who need to type long emails or documents on their smartphones.
However, the success of the Palm Pre will also depend on the availability of applications. While webOS has its own app store, it is not as extensive as Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store. This could be a drawback for users who rely on a wide variety of apps for their daily needs.
The Palm Pre’s launch in the UK through O2 offers a new option for consumers looking for a smartphone with unique features. With competitive tariffs and the added benefit of unlimited data, the Palm Pre aims to carve out its own niche in a market dominated by giants like Apple and Samsung. Only time will tell if it can live up to the expectations and make a significant impact.
