The Opera Mini browser application for the Apple iPhone was only launched two days ago, and yesterday was it first full day of world wide availability, but it has already been downloaded over one million times since it was launched.
That is a pretty impressive amount of downloads in just two days, it is currently in the top 10 in free downloads around the world and sitting at the number one spot in many of the iPhone download stores in different countries.
Opera Software CEO Lars Boilesen said the following ‘Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone–especially during heavy Web traffic’.
We have tried the Opera Mini browser out on the iPhone and it is pretty good, it is certainly a lot faster than the Safari browser that comes with the iPhone, the only problem with it is that you cant use it for default tasks, and have to use the Safari browser.
The popularity of the Opera Mini browser on the iPhone must have shown Apple that users like choice, I personally would like to be able to chose my default browser on the iPhone and would like to see other browsers like Firefox available, although I suspect we will be stuck with Safari as the default browser for quite some time.
