If you have ever used a GPS device in the car or while walking, you know that these devices are able to route you directly where you want to go. Typically, you have options for routes like the shortest or fastest. In the future, you might have options for routes based on how pretty the route is to look at. A new algorithm being developed by Yahoo researchers promises to choose the most beautiful route for your trip.
The idea is that the algorithm could route you in an unfamiliar place to a destination, while taking you close to some attractions on the way. This algorithm sounds a lot like one that some GPS makers have for motorcyclists that will find you curvy roads to ride nearby. Yahoo Labs researchers from Spain have worked out a way to measure the beauty of a location within cities using Yahoo GPS
That algorithm chooses a route to maximize the beauty of the chosen route between two locations. The algorithm also uses crowd-sourced opinions of the beauty of images. The researchers showed visitors to UrbanGems two photos and asked them to choose the prettiest of the pair and used those details to develop a beauty score for an area.
