Family and friends that have been using one Netflix account will be pleased to learn that from today a new feature called Netflix multiuser is now available to help keep recommendations more personal to one person.
Neil Hunt, Netflix’s chief product officer, explained to the Verge website that a majority of Netflix accounts are used by multiple people, typically members of the same household. This new feature aims to enhance the user experience by ensuring that each individual’s viewing preferences are accurately reflected in their recommendations.
How Netflix Multiuser Works
Using one account across multiple users then dilutes the recommendation system for Netflix, which is tailored using movies and TV series you might have watched in the past. This can lead to a less personalized experience, where recommendations may not align with an individual’s tastes. For example, if one person in the household enjoys action movies while another prefers romantic comedies, the mixed viewing history can confuse Netflix’s algorithm, resulting in less accurate suggestions for both users.
Now, when Netflix users log in to their account, they will be presented with a different color for each user. Clicking on your tile will direct you to your own Netflix page, where your viewing history and preferences are stored separately from others. This means that if you love documentaries and your sibling loves animated series, your recommendations will no longer overlap, providing a more tailored viewing experience for everyone involved.
Benefits of Netflix Multiuser
The introduction of Netflix multiuser profiles brings several benefits:
1. Personalized Recommendations: Each user gets recommendations based on their own viewing history, making it easier to discover new content that aligns with their interests.
2. Separate Watch Lists: Users can maintain their own watch lists, ensuring that they can easily find and continue watching their favorite shows and movies without sifting through content added by others.
3. Parental Controls: Parents can set up profiles for their children with appropriate content restrictions, ensuring a safe viewing environment for younger family members.
4. Profile Customization: Users can customize their profiles with unique avatars and names, adding a personal touch to their Netflix experience.
For instance, a family of four can now have individual profiles for each member. The parents can have profiles that recommend the latest thrillers and dramas, while the kids can have profiles that suggest animated movies and educational shows. This separation not only enhances the viewing experience but also ensures that children are not exposed to content meant for adults.
Moreover, Netflix multiuser profiles can be particularly beneficial for roommates or friends sharing an account. Each person can have their own profile, preventing the mix-up of viewing histories and ensuring that everyone gets the most out of their Netflix subscription.
In addition to these benefits, Netflix has also made it easy to switch between profiles. If you start watching a movie on your profile and later want to switch to another user’s profile, you can do so with just a few clicks. This flexibility ensures that the multiuser feature is convenient and user-friendly.
