Nest has announced that Amazon’s Alexa range of devices will soon support their Nest Thermostat, this includes the Amazon Echo and we presume the new devices that were announced recently.
The update should be made available to Echo enabled devices within the next couple of weeks and you will be able to tell Alexa to change the temperature on your Nest.
How the Integration Works
“Alexa, set my bedroom thermostat to 68 degrees,” you say. And your Amazon Echo or Amazon Fire TV will connect to the Nest Learning Thermostat in your bedroom. And turn up the heat.
Nest’s first official collaboration with Amazon Alexa will go live in a couple weeks. The connection is simple – you can tell Alexa to turn the temperature up or down. But Alexa can also learn new Skills. So you’ll be able to say “Alexa, tell the thermostat that I’m too hot.” Or ask about the temperature and humidity. Or tell it that you’re leaving.
This integration marks a significant step forward in smart home technology, making it easier for users to control their home environment with simple voice commands. The Nest Thermostat, known for its learning capabilities and energy-saving features, will now be even more accessible and user-friendly. For instance, if you’re in the middle of cooking and your hands are full, you can simply ask Alexa to adjust the temperature without having to stop what you’re doing.
Additional Features and Benefits
Beyond basic temperature adjustments, the integration with Alexa opens up a range of possibilities. For example, you can create routines that include temperature changes. Imagine saying, “Alexa, good night,” and having your thermostat set to your preferred sleeping temperature, while also turning off lights and locking doors. This level of automation can significantly enhance your daily life, making your home more comfortable and secure.
Moreover, Alexa’s ability to learn new Skills means that the functionality of your Nest Thermostat can continue to expand. Future updates could include more nuanced controls, such as adjusting the temperature based on the time of day or your specific preferences. You might even be able to integrate weather forecasts, so your thermostat can preemptively adjust for an incoming cold front or heatwave.
Another exciting aspect is the potential for energy savings. By making it easier to control your thermostat, you’re more likely to make adjustments that can save energy and reduce your utility bills. For example, you can set up Alexa to remind you to lower the thermostat when you leave for work, or to turn it up just before you arrive home, ensuring comfort without wasting energy.
