Juts a few days after being shipped and available to purchase the new Neo Geo X handheld gaming console has been hacked and is now capable of running custom ROM’s.
The terms “hacked” is a little generous for the process of converting the Neo Geo X to accept custom ROMs, as the “hacking” process involves nothing more than opening the device up to access the consoles internal SD card. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.
But before you start taking your Neo Geo X console apart be aware that there are a few restrictions on the hack/work around for playing custom ROMs. The Hot Hardware website explains:
“With the internal SD card plugged into your PC, you can simply copy over your custom ROMs in order to play them on the device. But, there are a couple of important caveats. At the moment, the device requires certain details to align in order for a game to run, such as the game name and its size. Thus, in order to play a non-shipping game on the device, it needs to be renamed to a game that already exists, and weigh no more in byte-size. In the end, you might be entering the Metal Slug icon on the device, but will see a different game entirely.”
