Bioware have announced that they’re giving Commander Shepherd the option to pursue a gay romance even when playing as a man in Mass Effect 3. This of course was the cause of heated debate on the Bioware forums. So far, so unexpected. Because while the knee jerk reaction, and to be fair one justified by the discussion around Dragon Age 2 ont he same subject, would be to brand the objectors homophobes and move on, there are actually *gasp* some cogent points made on both sides.
Suddenly turning characters gay that have been straight for two games now just to give male Sheppard same-sex playtime pals would either be awkward and hard to get past or just downright implausible and immersion-ruining. The counter-argument is that Shepherd pretty much nails anything with a pulse anyway, so why draw an arbitrary line at suddenly turning characters gay? Hell, they brought him back from the dead and no one batted an eyelash.
Hey, remember when game creators had that thing called creative control and they made something without input from people who have no idea what they’re on about? And then if it turned out well, that was fine and if people didn’t agree with it that was also fine because it was a creative choice and you realized games that offend you can still be good games? We miss those times.
