LG is planning to join the list of manufacturers who are working on Windows Phone 8 powered devices. According to LightreadingIndia, a Windows Phone 8 device is under development in their R&D center, however, there is no guarantee that LG will release it globally. The Korean manufacturer is still assessing the market conditions for Windows Phone 8 and will later decide whether the devices will hit the shelves or not.
According to LG India’s Managing Director, Kwon Soon,
At home (South Korea), we are actually working on our Windows Phone 8 OS powered smartphone.
He further stated that Android will be the operating system that the company will focus on,
Android is the major platform globally, given its acceptance and penetration. Although, we believe that Windows will pick up going ahead, as Microsoft is pumping efforts into it,” Kwon further explained
There is no doubt that Windows Phone 8 is gaining momentum and its market share has been improving each quarter. But still it may not be the most profitable investment for LG as there are already few giants who entered the Windows Phone 8 market, with Nokia being on top of the list with its Lumia devices. Other manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC have released their fair share of devices along with some Chinese manufacturers including Huawei and ZTE, who also released a Windows Phone lineup that is available globally.
I think Windows Phone 8 devices have the potential to compete with other operating systems if the manufacturers can release some decent high end devices. It’s up to LG now to decide whether this investment it worth it or not.
