Created by Lego fan Brandon Griffith, this Lego Star Wars chess set has broken the chess paradigm of one figure per piece. The kings include Luke and Leia together, and the queen is represented by Han and Chewie.
Brandon decided to build three different chess sets in total, one for each original episode. This is the first of the series: Star Wars: A New Hope Lego Chess, which weighs in at a whopping 25 lbs.
Design and Inspiration
Brandon’s inspiration for this unique chess set came from his love for both Lego and Star Wars. He wanted to create something that not only paid homage to the iconic movie series but also offered a new way to experience the classic game of chess. By combining characters and scenes from “A New Hope,” he has managed to create a set that is both visually stunning and functionally robust.
My goals with the individual chess pieces are to:
1. Ensure they are durable enough to play the game with.
2. Present a piece that closely represents a scene from the movie. My favorites are “Obi-Wan and the tractor beam” & “Greedo.”The chess board:
1. Built strong enough to carry without breaking.
2. The playing area easily removes from the rest of the board to reveal compartments to store the pieces.
3. The detailing on the side of the board utilizes a lot of SNOT (Studs Not On Tops) techniques. This is a technique that came out of the Adult Lego community.
Unique Features and Techniques
One of the standout features of this chess set is its durability. Brandon has ensured that each piece is sturdy enough to withstand regular gameplay. This is no small feat, considering the intricate designs and the small size of Lego bricks. The use of SNOT techniques, which involve placing Lego bricks in unconventional orientations, adds a level of detail and complexity that is rarely seen in traditional Lego builds.
The chessboard itself is a marvel of engineering. It is designed to be strong enough to carry without breaking, which is essential given its 25 lbs weight. Additionally, the playing area can be easily removed from the rest of the board, revealing compartments where the pieces can be stored. This makes it not only a beautiful display piece but also a practical one.
Brandon’s attention to detail is evident in the way he has chosen to represent scenes from the movie. For example, the “Obi-Wan and the tractor beam” piece captures a pivotal moment from “A New Hope,” while the “Greedo” piece brings to life one of the most memorable characters from the series. These choices add a layer of storytelling to the game, making each match a journey through the Star Wars universe.
Community and Impact
Brandon’s work has garnered significant attention within both the Lego and Star Wars communities. His use of advanced building techniques and his commitment to capturing the essence of the Star Wars universe have made his chess set a topic of discussion among fans and builders alike. The set has been featured on various platforms, including Make, where it has inspired other Lego enthusiasts to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with Lego bricks.
Moreover, this chess set serves as a testament to the creativity and passion that can be found within the Adult Lego community. The use of SNOT techniques and the focus on durability and functionality are indicative of the high level of skill and dedication that adult builders bring to their projects. Brandon’s work not only entertains but also educates, showing what is possible when imagination and craftsmanship come together.
In conclusion, Brandon Griffith’s Lego Star Wars chess set is a remarkable fusion of two beloved franchises. It breaks new ground in both the Lego and chess worlds, offering a unique and engaging way to experience the Star Wars saga. With its durable design, intricate details, and innovative techniques, this chess set is sure to be a cherished piece for any fan of Lego or Star Wars.
